One story, twice a day. Every word with le or la. Then speak.

The routine we give our own students, and the one built into every FRANZA book. It takes 15 minutes a day. Follow it step by step for 30 days.

The FRANZA method

Nothing here comes from a textbook template. Every book, guide and routine comes from our own lessons: the mistakes our students really make, the habits that got them speaking, and the small daily gestures that make words stay. Follow the routine step by step: it is what makes the method work.

  1. Morning: read today's storyUnderline the words you do not know and write their meaning, in English at first. Keep the words of the day.
  2. Learn every noun with le or laGender has no reliable rule in French. Write la valise, not valise, and the article will come by itself when you speak.
  3. Evening: remember, then rereadBefore you open the book, try to recall the morning's words. Then read the same story again, out loud.
  4. Twice a day, three if you canSame story, morning and evening, for 30 days. Two readings a day is the minimum; three is ideal.
  5. Go back to the lessonWhen a story uses a rule, the note gives you its lesson in Grammar to Speaking. Read it, then reread the sentence.
  6. Say it, then speak with someone2 to 5 minutes a day with a speaking guide, out loud. Then talk with a teacher or a partner: reading builds the words, speaking puts them to work.
English help, at the right doseNotes in the learner's own language help beginners learn more words, and the advantage shrinks as they improve. So the English fades from book to book.Kim, Lee & Lee, Language Teaching Research
Almost every word is familiarGuessing new words stops working when more than about one word in fifty is unknown. Each story is written for its level, repeats its words and explains the rest.R. Waring, Extensive Reading Central
Rereading aloud builds speedLearners who timed their reading and reread aloud read faster after 12 weeks. Every story has a ticket to note your time.Reading in a Foreign Language, 2018

How the books fit together

Each book does one job, and each one points to the others.

  1. Grammar to SpeakingLearn the rule, explained once in English, then say it.
  2. 30 Days to Read FrenchMeet the rule in a story, morning and evening. The note sends you back to the lesson.
  3. Speaking guidesSay it out loud, five sentences a day, on your phone.
  4. LessonsUse it in a real conversation with a teacher, and get corrected.
